How Fast Do F1 Cars Go?

an F1 car going extremely fast

‘How fast do F1 cars go?’ It’s a question that’s entered all of our minds and thankfully, we have the answer. We see them zooming around the tracks at speeds that leave marks on the floor, gasps from our mouths, and the wind in our hair.

In this blog, our experts have the answer on every F1 fan’s lips and we’re sure you’re going to be shocked by the answer! We’ll also explain why these cars can drive so fast and the limits placed on drivers to maintain their safety.

Right, you ready? Set? Let's go!

How Fast Do F1 Cars Go?

The top speed of F1 cars is 233mph! However, it’s important to note that this peak speed is only possible on long, straight-line runs by cars with the latest technology. On a typical track, F1 cars usually reach an average speed of 200mph. With this in mind, the cars can get from 0 - 60mph in just 1.8 seconds!

Everyone’s favourite F1 helmet wearer, Valterri Bottas reached a top speed during the qualifying for the 2016 European GP in Baku. He also holds the title for the highest speed in an F1 race in the same year, as he reached 231.4mph during the Mexican GP.

However, this speed record was broken in 2024 when Franco Colapinto drove 221.4mph during the Las Vegas GP qualifying.

Why Do F1 Cars Go So Fast?

As the years have advanced, so has the technology that has allowed F1 cars to go at these incredible speeds. Let’s explore these developments.

Aerodynamics

We’ve all heard of aerodynamics, but do you actually know what it means? It’s how objects move through the air and the forces that can impact this.

No matter which brand it is, all F1 cars are now equipped with advanced aerodynamic components and designs - like on the wings. This is to reduce drag and provide additional downforce.

Engines

Unlike Formula E, Formula 1 uses hybrid powertrains and turbocharged engines that allow the cars to reach incredible speeds. The engine generates unmatched power and torque to get to higher speeds than ever seen. As technology continues to advance, who knows what speeds we will get to see?

Suspension Systems

One of the most crucial aspects of any car is the suspension and F1 cars are no exception. These cars now have highly technical suspension systems that are created to reduce the wear on tyres and increase the grip. This allows drivers to have greater control of corners and enter them at higher speeds to maintain momentum.

Car weight

Apart from a car’s design, its weight is crucial to ensuring high speeds. Materials such as carbon fibre are used to create the lightest chassis possible to maximise the best performance possible. The weight of an F1 car has to be a minimum of 798kg - this excludes the weight of the driver and the fuel. However, this is going to change in 2026 as the regulations of the FIA (Federation International de l’Automobile) are going to decrease the weight by 30kg to 768kg.

Are There Any Limits on How Fast an F1 Car Can Go?

It goes without saying that safety is a top priority at Formula 1 and there are a number of safety measures in place to ensure drivers can reach these top speeds without putting their safety at risk.

The FIA has placed restrictions on the speed of Formula 1 cars and all cars are fitted with an electronic speed limiter as well as an on-board monitoring system. This is to make sure that they do not exceed the maximum speed limit and that drivers and engineers can consistently be in communication to ensure safety is paramount.

On top of that, the halo was introduced in 2018 and each F1 car has a reinforced cockpit and a fire extinguisher system! The FIA also requires all drivers to wear a safety suit that is specifically designed to protect them if there is an F1 crash. It is made from fireproof material and has a HANS device which reduces any potential neck injuries. Of course, helmets are also a necessity and they are tested and approved by the FIA prior to races to ensure they meet the FIA’s safety standards.
